Touching the Ancient One

In February 1954, an Air Force C-47 broke apart over the Susitna Valley and fell onto Kesugi Ridge. This is the story of the six survivors, their rescuers and the life-long friendships bonded by their harrowing experience. Told by one of the survivors, Rupert Pratt's book celebrates life and friendship through a remarkable story.

Hearse to Hoops

In 1962, Bill Brokaw bought a 1950 Cadillac hearse and drove it to Alaska. Forty years later, he is recounting not only that trip, but the many adventures he's had in the state. A big part of Bill's life has been his passion for Alaska men's basketball - touring the state playing on Earl Ramp's "over-40" team when it was truly a frontier.

Alaskana Catholica

Dog teams driven by missionaries through the silent frozen wilderness is just one of the stories in a new book chronicling the history of Catholicism in Alaska. "Alaskana Catholica: A History of the Catholic Church in Alaska," by Jesuit Father Louis Renner, is a reference work in an encyclopedia form with alphabetical listings of priests, religious, parishes and places that have made an impact on the faith in Alaska. The book looks at a history that stretches back to the day in 1779 when a Spanish Franciscan celebrated the first Mass in Alaska near present-day Craig.

Alaskabooks

There are so many books being published about Alaska, it's hard to keep track. Even though that's my job! Thus this blog. I'm hoping to add to it at least weekly, or daily if there's a lot showing up. I'm going to concentrate of the little guys...the self-published authors with a story to tell. Alaskans who've had great adventures, great lives, great ideas and great fun are my focus.
